Background Information: Wiki Link Here! See Spring and Summer 100AG for her main canon material during the events of the show.

Personality:

Those that meet Toph might recognize her name pun right away. She’s tough, stubborn, confrontational and often quite snarky to strangers, usually not in a mean way, but as a persona to make herself seem stronger and independent. To her enemies, she’s confident, observant and cunning. Those that get to know her usually learn that this is mostly a front for her warmer side, that she’s kind and loyal to her friends, and that her rougher outer shell is mostly there to mask her insecurities about her disability and ‘assigned’ role in society.

Like her bending style, she’s sturdy and straightforward with a surprising amount of emotion behind her masks. She's also still 12, so there's plenty of emotional maturity to come.

Tough: Some things are so clear they’re in the name! Toph is tough, she snuck away from her parents to compete in an underground fighting ring, single-handedly stopped the hidden library from sinking until her friends were safe, and will happily sleep in a rock tent on her back or find her own food. When she is captured by other earthbenders in a metal prison, she fights back instead of giving up. She grew up blind, but overcame her disability through hard work, learning to earthbend from the giant badgermoles after running away from home. Throughout the series, she’s constantly dealing with new hardships and persevering through them. Her tough persona often makes it difficult to show her emotions, combining with her independence to keep things to herself and cover up her emotions.

Independent: Toph is fiercely independent. Having spent most of her life being coddled and protected by her parents, she constantly tries to take on responsibilities and make her own decisions, eventually abandoning her family to travel with the Gaang. She begins the series with an “I can carry my own weight!’ attitude, refusing to help out the rest of the team because she doesn’t need any of their help. She often mistook gestures of kindness as acts of pity or attempts to undermine her independence. Through emotional development and advice from Iroh, she eventually accepts some help, bonds with the rest of Team Avatar, and works with Katara to start trying to repair the relationship with her family. Though it’s clear there’s still much progress to be made on her need for independence.

Stubborn: Her stubbornness is apparent immediately upon joining Team Avatar, combined with her desire for independence and causing friction in the group, especially with Katara, who represents a more motherly, caring role throughout the show -- the exact attitude Toph fought against with her family. As mentioned before, when she doesn’t like the plan others come up with she’s perfectly willing to leave them and stick to her guns, though she does become a bit more receptive to working with her friends over the course of the show. Toph emphasizes how, like a rock, one needs to be steadfast and determined when she teaches Aang to earthbend, instructing him not to run away or try and dodge the boulder she rolls his way.

Confrontational: Toph deals with things ‘head-on’ (cue smashing a rock with her head) and isn’t afraid to express her opinions to others regardless of their age or authority, arguing with both Iroh and the Earth King when she feels they’re wrong. Her confrontational attitude is also a key point in the conflict between herself and Katara, whose caring approach contrasts Toph’s tough love.

Insecure: Despite all of her self-confidence, tough attitude, and drive for independence, it’s clear that Toph is quite insecure. As mentioned before, despite claiming not to care about other peoples’ opinions, Toph was hurt when she was made fun of, and being told she was in fact pretty cheered her up. Stemming from her upbringing, a lot of her independence and stubbornness is in an attempt to show that she’s not the fragile blind girl her parents and everyone else thought she was, and she constantly tries to reassert this. Her insecurities are the reason why she had so many conflicts with Team Avatar upon joining them, mostly her refusal to accept help, and believing she was getting special treatment for her disabilities. It’s pretty clear that she’s still afraid of being considered an outcast, and hides her insecurities behind her other traits. She does learn to open up to the team over the show, and a bit in general too after encouragement from Iroh, but she still keeps mostly to herself.

Observant: King Bumi tells Aang to find a master that is patient and waits for the opportunity to strike, a trait he finds in Toph, who, despite being blind, is able to observe the world around her in a completely different way, waiting for her opponent to move first before striking at their openings. Her ability to read body language, a keen sense of hearing, and her patient style lead to Toph being quite observant. She’s quick to trust Iroh, since she can tell he’s a kind man, and when Zuko attempts to apologize and join Team Avatar, she’s the only one who believed him, noting that he was being earnest in his apologies and offer, despite everything the group had against him.

Kind: Beneath that rough exterior, and despite her insecurities, Toph is a kind kid at heart. She gives people a chance where others wouldn’t, such as Zuko’s apology, and tries to understand people on a deeper level. Despite being blind, or perhaps because she is, Toph is able to ‘look’ deeper and relate to people more genuinely. She doesn’t see how someone looks, how they’re dressed, nor care about their wealth or station, having left her wealthy, noble family behind. While not as caring or nurturing as Katara, she looks out for her friends and seems to have a good understanding of how people feel. During the Runaway episode, we see a lot of her kindness coming to the surface, both in her heartfelt reconciliation with Katara after a disagreement over her mothering nature, and in admitting that leaving her parents ‘probably really hurt them’, still considering their feelings despite not enjoying being with them.

Abrasive: Accompanying her straightforward nature, Toph is also quite abrasive. Her to-the-point attitude and lack of subtleties often leave her talking and acting bluntly, saying things as they are and not sugar-coating her language or behaviour. She’ll point out when her friends are letting other things affect them, even if it’ll hurt their feelings briefly, because she believes the truth needs to be said, and that people need it to change. During her conflicts with Katara, Toph constantly picks at her feelings with harsh assessments of her character, and her blunt approach to training Aang is done the way she believes is best, even if it makes him uncomfortable.

Abilities & Inventory: Wiki link to Powers. Toph can only bend Earth, not Reality, so things rarely get carried away. Her emotion-sensing prowess is perhaps the most difficult one to handle in RP, though I've found communication and playing it 'light' where appropriate seem to work fine, this can be nerfed slightly if preferred! As for inventory, Toph travels light. A sleeping pack, some food, and her clothes is all she has on her, along with some jewlery.

Bending gives a lot of opportunities for alteration with Dreamotion, be it enhancing her powers in some way (say, by creating stone instead of just moving it). Or adding to her abilities in other ways, such as elevating the text on paper to allow her to read it as if it were braille. (she'd have to learn to read first though) The possibilities really are endless, and she's surprisingly creative when she wants to be.

Suitability & Plans:

Toph is, at least to me, an incredibly fun character to play. While the existing castmates are a fun draw, she's the kind of character who can interact with new people fairly easily. She likes to joke around, act tough, and just be sarcastic or taunting. Which is to say, she's the kind of character that makes approaching others easy, she has no real desire to hide away in a house in peace for the rest of her life.

Much like her canon point, Toph is driven to explore, I can see her wanting to discover more about the world she's in, how it works, etc. She wants to meet new people, try new foods, and learn more in general. She also tends to hate routine (at least in her youth), so I've generally found it very easy to find motivation for her to engage with mod plots and player ideas, or start something of her own.

Personally, I am very driven by new and interesting CR, and I think Toph will be a good character to help explore that. Seeing where other people lead her or where she leads other people, and exploring some of her personality quirks and development that don't get as much love or resolution during the show. I also think her blindness and bending abilities have a lot of interesting potential for fun prompts and encounters in a world of dreams (such as the lack of many visible details in her nightmare that others can experience).

Honestly, I could go on about ideas and interests forever so I'll stop there to save you guys some reading, but hopefully that's enough to explain things! :)

Test Drive Sample: Sample (We kindof went off, whoops!)

Questions: Questions will likely come to the mods as I encounter them in the game. At the moment nothing comes to mind
